Arm Balances
Description
EKA PADA KAUNDINYASANA 2 Asana group: arm balance, twist, forward bend Translation of the name from Sanskrit: • eka — one; • pada — foot; • Koundinya — a sage of the Vasishta lineage; • dvi — two. 1. Setup Starting position: Utkatasana. On an exhale bring the left elbow behind the right knee. Lower the palms to the floor at shoulder width or wider. Fingers point forward. Shift the weight onto the arms, bend them, lift the feet off the floor; the right elbow does not press into the torso. Straighten both legs. Stretch the chest over the floor. Shoulders level, look forward. In Eka Pada Koundinyasana 2 the left leg is taken back. 2. Simplified and advanced variations Simplified variations: • the right elbow presses into the torso; • legs slightly bent; • Parshva Bakasana; • one foot on the floor (in Eka Pada Koundinyasana 2). Advanced variations: • transition into Eka Pada Koundinyasana 1; • transition into Astavakrasana and back. 3. Safety • The wrists can become overloaded — use the simplified variations. • Compensate the wrists after coming out of the pose. • Lower back: the twist is performed only with a straight spine.
