Arm Balances
Description
EKA PADA KAUNDINYASANA 1 Asana group: arm balances, forward bends Translation of the name from Sanskrit: • eka — one; • pada — foot; • Koundinya — a sage of the Vasishta lineage. 1. Setup Starting position: a wide step. Bring the right shoulder under the right knee, aiming the elbow toward the pelvis. Lower the inner part of the right thigh onto the right shoulder. Palms at shoulder width or slightly wider, fingers pointing forward. Straighten the right leg and shift the weight forward until the left leg lifts off the floor. The left leg is in one line with the torso. The pelvis is in one plane with the torso and the back leg. Shoulders level, look forward. Stretch the chest over the floor. Distribute the weight evenly on both arms. 2. Simplified and advanced variations Simplified variations: • move the left leg to the right (in the Bakasana variation); • keep the left leg on the floor and bend the right leg; • lower the left knee to the floor. Advanced variations: • transition into Astavakrasana and back. 3. Safety • The wrists can become overloaded — use the simplified variations. • Compensate the wrists after coming out of the pose.
