SIDE SUPPORT
Strength Asanas
Description
SIDE SUPPORT Asana group: arm balances Translation of the name from Sanskrit: • vasistha — name of the sage Vasishta; asana — pose. 1. Setup Starting position: lie on one side with the legs extended and the feet together. Place the palm under the shoulder and in one motion lift the pelvis, straightening the torso. The shoulder stays directly above the wrist. Extend the upper arm up and gaze forward. Breathe evenly and keep the side muscles engaged. 2. Simplified and advanced variations Simplified variations: • lower the knee of the bottom leg to the floor; • do the pose supported on the forearm. Advanced variations: • raise the upper leg with the knee bent; • hold each side for 60 seconds. 3. Injury prevention Do not put body weight on the wrist if it hurts. Avoid arching the lower back — keep the pelvis in line. Shorten the hold if the shoulder feels strained.
