Sitting & Lying Asanas
Description
AGNI STAMBHA ASANA Asana group: sitting poses Translation of the name from Sanskrit: • agni — fire; • stambha — pillar, support. 1. Setup Starting position: Dandasana. Bend the knees, cross the shins so that the right shin lies on the left, the right foot near the left hip, the left foot near the right hip. The feet are active, the toes pointed. The back is straight, the crown of the head stretches upward. Place the palms on the knees or on the mat beside the hips. With each inhale lengthen the spine, with each exhale relax the hips. Hold for a comfortable time, then change the crossing of the shins. 2. Simplified and advanced variations Simplified variations: • sit on a folded blanket to release the hips; • cross only the ankles (Sukhasana). Advanced variations: • deepen the pose by pressing the outer edges of the feet into the mat and squaring the hips. 3. Injury prevention Do not press the crossed feet into the opposite thigh with force. Keep the knees relaxed. If there is discomfort in the knees or ankles, reduce the crossing or sit on a support.
